Self-Help Core Groups

PURPOSE AND FUNCTION OF A GROUP

1. The purpose of a group is to prevent recidivism.
2.

Groups shall be committed to the individual who has:

  • determined to successfully integrate back into the community, and
  • agreed to abide by the Seventh Step philosophy as a foundation for freedom.
3.

To further the purpose of the group, groups shall perform the following functions:

  • use the Seventh Step pledge and the Seven Steps to Freedom in this constitution as a basis for developing realistic thinking and behaviour in group members,
  • employ the self help philosophy including techniques such as "hot seating" in group meetings, and
  • employ positive peer pressure in group meetings.
4. Groups are solely intended to reduce recidivism and they shall not carry out other functions delegated to agencies such as lobbying for penal reform or fund raising in the public sector.
